Golden Retrievers are very people-oriented and outgoing. They need to be around people and thrive for love and attention. They cannot constantly live in the kennel outdoors, but should be kept indoors. Yard should be used for daily activities only. If you are absent for much time and must leave your dog at home during your absence, you'd better not buy a Golden Retriever.
Being hunting dogs, Golden Retrievers require much exercise - about 30 minutes twice a day. They will not exercise by themselves and without attention from the owner, the dog will become bored, irritating and may develop bad habits, such as excessive barking, chewing, or digging. Some animals tend to roam, so the fences around the yard should be rather high.
Show quality Golden Retrievers require professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. It may cost about $50. Pet quality dogs also need regular grooming, nail trimming and ear cleaning. Golden Retrievers are relatively large dogs and require high quality food. It costs about $400 a year. This breed is not suitable for fastidious housewives, because it sheds constantly.

If they are healthy and happy, the puppy is usually of high quality. Ask the breeder about genetic problems in this particular bloodline and see the health certificate. Purebred Golden Retrievers should be sold with a written contract, pedigree, registration, and health certificate with information on vaccinations.
