Before the age of 3 weeks puppies have no mental capacity and cannot live without the mother. No human handling is required; it may even be dangerous particularly if the immune system of the puppy is too weak to fight infections. At the age of 4 weeks puppies should be introduced to people and other animals. They begin to show signs of trainability. When the puppy is 7 weeks old, it is able to recognize people and respond to voices. The mother trains the litter constantly up to the age of 8 weeks.

When the puppy is taken to a new home, it needs love and security; it is important to gradually expose it to loud voices and new environments. At this age dogs are able to learn simple commands: come, sit, no, stay. Up to the age of 15-16 weeks the mental capacity of the Golden Retriever puppy becomes fully developed. The animal needs experiments and exercise. It is very important to train the dog regarding basic obedience and socialize it with various people. At this age Golden Retrievers try to dominate, but the owner should control it and show them who the boss is.

It appeared in England in the middle of the 19th century due to deliberate crossing of a yellow wavy coated retriever and a Tweed water spaniel.
