This breed owes its origin to invention of the gun. When people started to hunt with guns, they had to look for the wounded or killed game in dense bushes or in marshes. It was almost impossible without a hound to find waterfowl that fell in the water. Training other hunting breeds was not successful, as almost all hounds dislike water. Breeders experimented much until the ideal breed with a soft mouth, a good sense of smell, and of a suited size to fit into the boat, was created.

This breed was registered by AKC in 1925 and since that time the standard has not changed. These creatures are excellent in various competitions and become champions in obedience, agility, conformation and field trials. The breed is large and active. Males are 23-24 inches high at the withers and weigh 65-80 pounds; females are 21.5-22.5 inches high and weigh 55-65 pounds; deviations of more than one inch in height are disqualified. The characteristic feature of the breed is its dense long coat, which should be colored from light to dark yellow.
