Adopting a puppy from a rescue will insure that the dog has had some training and all its vacinations before it goes home with you.
For people who aren't prepared to go through the socialization and training of a pup, an older dog or even a senior pet can be a good alternative. If a young dog has to spend much time unsupervised, it will never develop into a reliable pet, but if a well-trained and socialized dog is left alone, it will soon adapt to the new conditions. A Golden Retriever of any age can become a good family companion, if well cared for. Second hand dogs easily form close bonds with their new families and forget the troubles they had.

There is no guarantee that you will get the perfect pet unless you buy from a reputable breeder. Still, it is impossible to foresee the condition and temperament of the dog in adulthood if you see it at 4 or 8 weeks of age. Much depends on the living condition in your home and your ability to train the dog properly. If you have a baby, avoid very dominant and aggressive dogs. In a house without small children, these active dogs make perfect pets.
